In this paper we generalize the Mellin multiplier theorem we proved earlier [8] to spaces with quite general weights, satisfying an Ap-type condition. Applications are made to the Hilbert transformation.

This note proves that if 1 ≤ p < ∞ and 1 − 1/p < k < 2 − 1/p then the space of sequences strongly Riesz summable [R, λ, k]p to 0 has AK. Using general results of Jakimovski and Russell it is then possible to deduce a best possible limitation condition and a convergence factor result for [R, λ, k]p.

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of (k, r)-free integers that do not exceed x. By definition, a (k, r)-free integer is one in whose canonical representation no prime power is in the interval [r, k−1] where 1 < r < k are fixed integers. These include as special cases the r-free integers, the semi r-free integers and the k-full integers. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of representations of an integer as the sum of a prime and a (k, r)-free integer, and use the result to prove that every sufficiently large integer can be represented as the sum of a prime and m = abk where a and b are both square free, (a, b) = 1, b > 1 and k is any fixed integer, k ≥ 3.

In this paper, we show that the Laguerre type and Jacobi type polynomials satisfy such a second order equation.

We prove two theorems on continuous modules: Decomposition Theorem. A continuous module M has a decomposition, M = M1 ⊕ M2, such that M1 is essential over a direct sum of indecomposable summands Ai of M, and M2 has no uniform submodules; and these data are uniquely determined by M up to isomorphism. Direct Sum Theorem. A finite direct sum of indecomposable modules Ai is continuous if and only if each Ai is continuous and Aj-injective for all j ≠ i.

B. Grünbaum and J. N. Lillington have considered inequalities defined by three lines meeting in a compact convex subset of the plane. We prove a conjecture of Lillington and propose some conjectures of our own.

The strongest positive results in the stability theory of C*-algebras assert that if are sufficiently close C*-subalgebras of (H) of certain kinds, then there is a unitary operator U on H near I, such that . We give examples of C*-algebras , both isomorphic to the algebra of continuous functions from [0, 1] to the algebra of compact operators on Hilbert space, which can be as close as we like, yet for which there is no isomorphism α: → with . Thus the results mentioned do not extend to these C*-algebras.

A counter-example is provided to the conjecture of Y. S. Pawar and N. K. Thakare that a semilattice S with 0 is 0-distributive if and only if for each filter F and each ideal I such that F ∩ I = Ø, there exists a prime filter containing F and disjoint from I. This shows that 0-distributivity is not equivalent to weak distributivity. A characterization is also given of finite P-uniform semilattices in terms of 0-distributivity.

The duals of the Camillo-Zelmanowitz formulas for Goldie dimension are shown to hold for Varadarajan's notion of corank, subject to the existence of certain cocomplements. In particular, the formulas hold for modules over perfect rings. Also, if R is semiperfect, then the vector space dimension formulas hold for all modules over R for Goldie dimension iff they hold for corank iff R is semisimple.

The paper is concerned with the Liouville-Riemann and Weyl fractional integrals. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a function to have a fractional integral which is equivalent to a constant.

A closed convex subset X of a Banach space E is said to have (i) asymptotic normal structure if for each bounded closed convex subset C of X containing more than one point and for each sequence in C satisfying ‖xn − xn + 1‖ → 0 as n → ∞, there is a point x ∈ C such that ; (ii) close-to-normal structure if for each bounded closed convex subset C of X containing more than one point, there is a point x ∈ C such that ‖x − y‖ < diam‖ ‖(C) for all y ∈ C While asymptotic normal structure and close-to-normal structure are both implied by normal structure, they are not related. The example that a reflexive Banach space which has asymptotic normal structure but not close-to normal structure provides us a non-empty weakly compact convex set which does not have close-to-normal structure. This answers an open question posed by Wong in [9] and hence also provides us a Kannan map defined on a weakly compact convex set which does not have a fixed point.

The purpose of the note is to calculate the group K0(A) where A is a ring all of whose Pierce stalks are simple artinian. This generalizes known results for A self injective of type In. For A regular, with injective hull, Â, of type In, a characterization is given for when A → Â it induces an isomorphism K0(A) → K0(Â).

Consider the nth order (n ≥ 1) delay differential inequalities and and the delay differential equation , where q(t) ≥ 0 is a continuous function and p, τ are positive constants. Under the condition pτe ≥ 1 we prove that when n is odd (1) has no eventually positive solutions, (2) has no eventually negative solutions, and (3) has only oscillatory solutions and when n is even (1) has no eventually negative bounded solutions, (2) has no eventually positive bounded solutions, and every bounded solution of (3) is oscillatory. The condition pτe > 1 is sharp. The above results, which generalize previous results by Ladas and by Ladas and Stavroulakis for first order delay differential inequalities, are caused by the retarded argument and do not hold when τ = 0.

In this note we show that the generic orthogonal stably free modules of type (2, 7) and (3, 8) have one free summand. This completes the work of other authors on free summands of orthogonal stably free modules.

In the spirit of our previous paper (Math. Z. 156, 265 - 277 (1977)) we present a functional analytic proof of the following result of M. A. Akcoglu: Every positive contraction on a reflexive Lp-space has a lattice dilation.

An example is given of a surjective map τ: [0,1] → [0,1] which takes every interval of [0,1] onto [0,1] eventually, but does not do so for certain other sets of positive measure.

We give an example of a p-convex quasi-Banach space E with 0 < p < 1 such that every bilinear map B: E × E →F into a p-convex quasi-Banach space F is identically zero. This resolves a question of Waelbroeck.
